Integer Operations: Positive & Negative Math Games

Games for the trickiest hurdle in middle-school math: subtracting a negative, multiplying two negatives, and the number-line intuition that holds it all together.

The integer rules look arbitrary on paper — “a negative times a negative is a positive” — until students have a number-line intuition for what those operations physically mean. Integer War and similar games put the rules on a number line, where a negative simply means “turn around,” and the seemingly arbitrary “two negatives cancel” becomes obvious from the geometry.

A common failure mode for sixth and seventh graders is to memorise the rules without the intuition; one wrong sign in a longer calculation, and the whole answer collapses. Use this collection to repair that gap. Twenty minutes a few times a week, alongside textbook problems, is enough to convert reluctant students into confident ones in about a month.
